Hi, Friend!
I’m Katy, the flower-obsessed owner of Katydid Home and Garden. You will usually catch me make-up free, sunglasses on my head, a little sunburned, a very big smile, and some type of flower petal or leaf stuck somewhere on my body. I started Katydid Home and Garden in 2020 at the height of the pandemic, and now I run the business full-time with five amazing team members.
Having fun, playing with plants, and inspiring other women are at the core of Katydid. Approaching work with a positive attitude for all projects and people has aided in staying at the top of my industry. Compassion for others and a sense of community is what inspires me. Something I’m proud of is that at the end of an event, I’m able to donate all the plants used to local woman-owned landscape businesses and any remaining florals to local nursing homes.
Here’s the dirt on how it all got started:
Childhood
Originally from the greater St. Louis area, Katy has lived all over the country, calling Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma, Utah, Arizona, and Florida home at various points in her life. These varied experiences during the first portion of life, as well as, a continuing passion for travel are what helps to inspire Katy in her designs, color schemes, and opulent planters.
Early Career
After college, Katy started her professional career working as a corporate trainer and business consultant. Training, teaching, and coaching franchise owners globally helped Katy to pull the trigger when she saw an opportunity to start her own business. Having worked with so many entrepreneurs and growing-up around two family businesses, Katy always knew she had the "bug"as well.
A Budding Passion
In 2017, Katy and her husband relocated to Jacksonville from the desert of Phoenix, Arizona. The lush Floridian landscape inspired her to rediscover her long-lost love for horticulture. As she immersed herself in classes, books, lectures, and webinars, her curiosity soon grew into an obsession.
Oh, hey, COVID
In March of 2020, after being let go from her employer, and not knowing what was ahead, Katy did some deep soul searching. She realized that life is too short to spend it doing anything less than what she truly loves. She was ready to create more beauty and happiness in her life and others.
A New Venture
Over the next few months, Katy created a business plan and Katydid Home and Garden was officially born in August 2020.
Looking Ahead
As the business continues to grow, Katy is laying plans for an expansion of services including classes, workshops and more. Stay tuned for exciting updates coming soon!
